Thoughtful and thought-provoking piece on class differences in academia. I found a lot to identify with in this essay (although, unlike the author, I became bogged down with debt) and think we need more conversations like this at university.

I am an anthropologist and musician based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. I currently teach cultural anthropology at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. My research interests include how communities navigate social change through education, technologies, non-government organisations (NGOs), and creative practices, with particular attention to hope and agency in urban contexts. These interests and have taken me to India and Papua New Guinea (among other places).
