Thoughtful and thought-provoking piece on class differences in academia. I found a lot to identify with in this essay (although, unlike the author, I became bogged down with debt) and think we need more conversations like this at university.

I am an anthropologist and musician based in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. I currently teach cultural anthropology at Victoria University of Wellington. My research interests include the anthropology of hope, NGOs and development, music and other creative practices, how people relate to the future, children and youth, gender relations, and agency. These interests and have taken me to India and Papua New Guinea (among other places).
